Biography

Allen was born in 1908. He was the son of James Mitchell and Mary Mason. He passed away in 1975. ^[1]

1910 – Kentucky, Ohio, Arnold, District 0124, 30 Apr 1910 Family number 34 in the census is the James Mitchell family. James (38) and wife Mary J. (37) along with children Lenerd (13), Ethel (11), Ellen (10), Lellie (7), Edna (3) and Allen (2). Also living with them is James’ mother-in-law, Mary E. Mason (71). James is a farmer and rents the farm they are living on. The couple has been married 17 years and reports that 6 of their 8 children are still living. Everyone reports they and their parents were born in Kentucky. Mother-in-law Mary reports that 10 of her 13 children are still living.

1920 – Alabama, Walker, Dora, District 112, 20 Jan 1920 Family number 316 in the census is the Jim Ware family. Jim (39) and wife Mary J. (45). Living with them are stepson Leonard (23) and then listed as sons are Lesley (18), Allen (11), Manual (6) and Ray (4). This is interesting because it appears the boys came with their mother in her new relationship. Jim shows he and his parents as born in Georgia, Mary J. shows she and her parents were born in Kentucky. The three oldest boys were born in Kentucky, but list their father as born in Georgia. The two youngest show they were born in Arkansas. Jim is a coal miner and they family rent the house they live in. They may be living on Basswell Road.

1930 – Arkansas,St. Francis, Goodwin, 4 Apr 1930 The 127th family on the census is the Allen Mitchel family. Allen (22), wife Ruth (20) and son Arthur L. (1) are renting the farm they live on. The couple reports they have been married for 2 years. His mother, Mary and her two sons from her second marriage are living next door to them. Allen reports he and his parents were born in Kentucky. Wife Ruth reports she was born in Mississippi as was her father but her mother was born in Tennessee. Son Arthur was born in Arkansas. Allen is a general farmer.

1940 – Arkansas, Woodruff County, Franks, District 74-17, 16 Apr 1940 Sheet 3A shows Allen Mitchell (32), wife Ruth Mitchell (28) and children Arthur L. (11), Chester W. (8), Allene (6) and Wallace E. (3) living in the home they rent for $2. Allen reports he has a 5th grade education and his wife completed 2 years of highschool. Allen is from Kentucky and his wife from Tennessee. All of their children were born in Arkansas. They report they were living in the same house in 1935. Allen does timber work in the forest and earned $250 the previous year.
