Biography

Andrew was the eldest son of Robert Mitchell, builder of Dunedin and Elizabeth Pelien Good.

He was employed by Laidlaw & Gray as a Hardware Salesman.

In 1916, Andrew enlisted, rank Private, Serial No 42540. Andrew was posted to Featherston Training Camp and on April 5, 1917 left New Zealand on the troopship 'Devon', destination Devonport, England with the 24th Reinforcements, Otago Infantry, D company. Despite a bout of illness in England requiring hospital treatment, Andrew rejoined his unit, leaving for France in July 1917.

Just a year later, Private Andrew Mitchell, aged 27, was Killed in Action in France. He is buried at Gommecourt Wood New Cemetery, Foncquevillers, Pas-de-Calais, France - grave ref- IV. C. 12.

Andrew Mitchell requested either his mother or father to be Executor of his Will.
