Napoleon B Mitchell was born in Tennessee, 1804. His parents were Asa and Charlotte Woodmancy Mitchell.[1][2][3] Napoleon emigrated to Texas, in 1834, settling in Bastrop colony. He immediately filed for his single-man's land grant there. His application is on file in Texas general land office, and application is on file there for 1/3 league, and recorded by the clerk. A copy is viewable in GLO.[4][5] Napoleon enlisted in the Texas army as a private.[3]
Napoleon was in Capt. William Carey's artillery company and served in the siege of Bexar, Oct.- December, 1835. Early 1836 there was a lull, he was present in the Alamo garrison. [3] [6]The Mexican Army showed up and surrounded the Alamo Feb 23, 1836
A female survivor of the Alamo battle, Juana Navarro Alsbury, at one time gave her version indicating a man named Mitchell was killed with a bayonet as he attempted to protect her. Since there were 2 Mitchells listed on the Alamo rosters, it could have been Napoleon or another, named Edwin T. Mitchell. [5]
Napoleon B was killed in the final attack of the Battle of the Alamo, March 6, 1836. The remains were buried in San Fernando Cathedral.[7]
