Biography

Elizabeth (Gray) Royer was born in Yorkshire, England.

Elizabeth was born Elizabeth Gray, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Gray, in Yarm about 1830 and baptised on 18 November 1830. ^[1]

On 13 May 1849 Elizabeth married Henry Mitchinson in Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, Durham. ^[2] It's possible Henry was a sailor, and spent some time at sea, ^[3] either in the Merchant Navy or Military. In 1861 ^{[4] [5] [6]} Elizabeth is living in Darlington Place, Hartlepool. She is now a widow with three children, who all seem to be the children of her and Henry Mitchinson.

By 1871 ^[7] Elizabeth is now Elizabeth Royer and is living with John Royer, Hardware Dealer, in Middlesborough,and has four children and also a daughter Elizabeth Mitchinson age 14. Elizabeth Mitchinson has been recorded as John's Step Daughter and the 4 younger children have surname Royer and recorded as his children. However they weren't married at this point and the boys John William and Charles Frederick were registered with surname Mitchinson at birth and the two girls as Royer.

On 22 July 1873 Elizabeth married John Royer in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. ^{[8] [9]} and in the census for 1881 ^[10] they are living in Lincoln Street, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough. John works as a Silk Weaver

John died in 1888 and Elizabeth likely died in 1894 in Middlesborough, age 62. ^[11]

Research Notes There are some anomolies yet to resolve. The two boys John William and Charles Frederick I think are most likely to be John Royer's children even though they were registered as Mitchinson. He has acknowledged them as his children in 1871 but not Elizabeth Mitchinson and they have kept the Royer name thoughout their lives. Elizabeth Mitchinson is also a problem as I have not found her birth and the name may be an error as I think this is Isobella Mitchinson born 1854.

Unable yet to find census for 1851 and 1891. However in 1851 Elizabeth, if Henry Mitchinson was a sailor, may well have been aboard ship with her husband, which is possible.
