At Hartlepool library, I reviewed the 1917-18 Ward's Directory of West Hartlepool, and found the following alphabetical listing:

"Mitchinson, Wm. shopkeeper, 128 Alma Street"

This entry parallels the entry in the 1912-13 Directory, which listed Robert J. as the shopkeeper at this address. These two are brothers. I've assumed that it is Robert J.'s brother who this listing relates to. This William (b. 1891) therefore would have been about 26 years old when operating this shop.

Nov. 13/96

Muriel Mitchinson (on November 12/96) described William (brother of Robert J.) as "the one with the money", and the one who was the boss of the plasterer's business. This must place into doubt 1929 as being the date of his death.

But the family gravestone shows his death to have been in 1929.

According to Cecil (Harry, 1919) Mitchinson, William (1891) died in 1929, 5 years before William's father William (1854), who died in 1934.

Cecil (Harry, 1919) Mitchinson says that after the death of the younger William, William's wife, Florrie, tried to keep the business going. The yard was in Burbank Street, and was still there when they came back from Canada in 1933. The business eventually folded. Florrie employed a man named Walter Pickersgill to run the business, but it was unsuccessful. Harry says that the business was not operating in 1935-36.
