Biography

Notables Project
Julie (Mitchum) Sater is Notable.

Julie Mitchum (birth name: Annette Marie Mitchum) was born on 23 July 1914 in Charleston, South Carolina. Her parents were James Thomas Mitchum and Ann Harriet Gundersen.[1]

She is a sister of actor Robert Mitchum - (1917-1997) and actor/director John "Jack" Mitchum - (1919-2001).

Her father was killed in a railroad accident when she was five years old. She lived with her paternal aunt in Lane, South Carolina for a period of time before moving back to her mother's family home in Connecticut.[2] The 1920 U.S. Census shows "Anna Mitchum" (age 5) living at 478 Logan Street, Fairfield, Connecticut along with her widowed mother, Ann (age 25), and two younger brothers: Robert (age 2), John (age 4 months).her grandparents' home in Fairfield, Connecticut along with her widowed mother and two younger brothers.[3] Her grandparents, Gustav and Petrine Gunderson, are enumerated next door.

During the 1930s, she married her first husband, Ernest Frederick Longaker.[4] The couple had one son in Pennsylvania before relocating to California to pursue Julie's acting career.[5] They divorced in 1938.[6] The 1940 U.S. Census shows Annette M. Mitchum (age 25, Divorced) and her son living with her mother and stepfather (Hugh and Ann Morris) in Beverly Hills.[7] By 1950, she was using the name "Julie Mitchum".[8]

In 1960, she married again, to Elliot Sater.[9][10][11] The couple remained together until his death in 1986.

Julie Mitchum was an actress, musician, and singer. She is listed as a performer in shows in her Connecticut town as early as 1922.[12] During World War II, she entertained the U.S. troops for nearly 2 years in Europe.[13] While she had bit parts in movies such as The High And Mighty (1954) and The Ten Commandments (1956), her most famous role was that of Ruth Bridgers in the movie House On Haunted Hill (1959).[14]

Along with her mother and sister, Julie was a member of the Bahá’í Faith.[15] In a 1966 interview, she described how her faith changed her life and how she had given up her Hollywood career to support the Bahá’í community in Arizona.[16] Julie and Elliot Sater were elected to the first Local Spiritual Assembly formed in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1967.[17]

In her later years, Julie Mitchum Sater participated in community theater projects[18] and gave Baha'i talks in her local community.[19][20]

She passed away on 23 February 2003 from complications of Alzheimer's Disease.[21][22] She is buried in Resthaven East Park Mortuary and Cemetery in Phoenix, Arizona.[23]

Research Notes

Julie's whereabouts in the late 1920s/early 1930s are unclear, but according to an interview with her brother in The Saturday Evening Post, he (Robert Mitchum) was sent to live with Julie in New York City in 1929 while she was pursuing acting there. She would've been about 15/16 years old at the time. - Freeth-52 02:12, 30 October 2022 (UTC)

I haven't yet found a record of her first marriage to Ernest Longaker, but she is listed as "Mrs Annette M. Longaker" in the Long Beach (California) City Directory as early as 1936. - Freeth-52 02:12, 30 October 2022 (UTC)

Fun fact: you can actually see Julie wearing her Bahá’í ring during some scenes in House On Haunted Hill! According to her granddaughter, she had her stunt double wear the ring, too. - Freeth-52 02:12, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
