Biography

John Mitchum was an American actor from the 1940s to the 1970s in film and television. He was the brother of the Hollywood actor Robert Mitchum. He was also a poet and songwriter known to his friends as "Big John."

John Newman Mitchum^[1] was born 6 September 1919 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the son of James Mitchum and Ann Gunderson. James was born several months after his father was killed in a tragic accident.

He was married several times.

He married Joy Hallward, the sister of Hollywood actress Gloria Grahame, 22 March 1941 in Yuma, Arizona.^[2] They were the parents of a daughter. They were divorced.

He married Nancy Jean Munro 30 August 1952 in Kearney, Nebraska.^[3] They were the parents of two children.

He married Dorothy Marie Woodward 5 December 1976 in Stateline, Nevada. ^[4]

He married Bonnie J Duff 19 October 1986. This was a 4th marriage for both of them. They were together until John's death in 2001. Bonnie was an actress and appeared in "My Mother India" in 2001 several months before John's death.

He died 29 November 2001 in Los Angeles, California at the age of 82.^[5] His ashes were scattered.^[6]

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Character actor John Mitchum, author of patriotic poems and brother of late star Robert Mitchum, died Tuesday. He was 82 and had suffered a series of crippling strokes.

Known to his friends as "Big John," the bulky performer appeared in nearly 50 movies and television shows, including "Dirty Harry," "Telefon" and the TV comedy "F Troop."

He also penned a number of patriotic poems about America, many of which actor John Wayne recorded on the 1973 album "America, Why I Love Her."

Mitchum worked in a number of projects with his older brother, including the 1967 western "The Way West" and the 1989 television movie "Jake Spanner, Private Eye." Robert Mitchum died in 1997.
