Biography

Madeleine Modeste Mius was born around 1742 in Baccaro, Acadie, Colony of Nova Scotia. Her parents were Charles Mius and Marie Marthe Hébert. [1]

Sheila Hubbard Macauley recorded the following in the introduction to The Hubbard Family of Nova Scotia: [2]

"Magdeleine Modeste Mius and her family had been forced to leave Nova Scotia during the Acadian Expulsion of 1755. She married first, Dominique Doucet, another Acadian refugee, sometime before 1763, probably in the Gloucester or Salem area of Massachusetts. Their names are included in a list of French who desired to go to France in August of 1763, according to records of the Canadian Archives. [3] Magdeleine Modeste was left a widow probably around 1770. It is thought that John Hubbard and Magdeleine Modeste Mius returned to Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia shortly after their marriage in 1772."

She married Dominique Doucet around 1758. [1]
Children: [4]

  1. Anne Doucet b. 15 Jan 1759, Massachusetts
  2. Isidore Doucet
  3. Dominique Doucet b. 20 May 1768, Baie Ste-Marie

She married John Hubbard (O'Bird) on January 16, 1772 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts. [5][1]
Children:

  1. Jean O Bird d. 12 Aug 1817, Ste-Anne-du-Ruisseau, Yarmouth,
  2. Marie Osite O'Bird b. Vers 1775, d. 1865 (Age ~ 70 years)
  3. Marie Venerante O'Bird
  4. Joseph Hubbard dit Pelotte
  5. Angelique Hubbard died bef. 1842.
  6. Charles O'Bird
  7. Madeleine O'Bird

Madeleine was alive as of June 13, 1786, when she appeared in front of Rev. Fr. Joseph-Mathurin Bourg and gave consent to her daughter Anne's marriage.[6] She was alive as of September 4, 1799, when her son, Dominique's marriage was revalidated.[7]

She passed away on 10 February 1826, the record giving her about 83 years of age. Her grave was blessed on 12 July 1826. In the record, the declaration of her daughter Magdelaine (an infirm) was noted by the priest Sigogne. She explained that the widow of Jean Oburd was buried on 12 February in the cemetery of parish, in the absence of a priest. [8]

Research Notes

Although several family trees show her parents as Jean Baptiste Muis (brother to Charles Amand) and Marie Joseph Surette, other reliable sources from respected researchers indicate that her parents were Charles Amand Mius and Marie Marthe Hébert.

Mius-119 and Mius-109 appear to represent the same person because: Even though there are conflicting opinions concerning her parents, (some believe they were Jean-Baptiste & Marie-Josephe Surette), several reliable sources indicate that she was born to Charles & Marie-Marthe Hébert and was married to Dominique Doucet and Jean Hubbard. (see research notes in Mius-109). Her death in 1826 at age 83 (estimated birth in 1742) is sourced.

Have flagged possible merge between Mius-109 and Mius-119. Entries indicate possible marriage to both Dominique Doucet and John Hubbard. May be confusion with fathers?

I just do not have access to enough info to know what is the most accurate. I have no objection if the Acadian Project wants to take over this profile.

I agree with this merge proposal. Respected researcher Ronnie-Gilles LeBlanc links her to parents Charles Mius and Marie-Marthe Hébert and mentions Dominique Doucet's death in MA in 1772, and her remarriage to Hubbard in 1772. (Source is in "Research Notes" section). The biography of Mius-119 also mentions both marriages. The link to Nova Scotia Archives in the biography names Magdelaine Mius widow of Dominique Doucet.

Any objections, Nina, if I remove her from these parents and propose a merge?

Looks like there's enough info to make the change.

Thanks for drawing attention to this. I hope someone can come up with some definitive info.

There seems to be a disagreement among WT, Ancestry and Family Search as to MMM's parents. All three agree her paternal grandfather is Joseph Muis-66 but they get there thru different brothers. Instead of Jean-Baptiste, Ancestry member trees and Family Search have here father as his brother Charles Armand. This also gives her different mothers - Marie M HEBERT instead of Marie J Surrette. Anyone else notice this and have comments?
