Biography

Notables Project
喜一 (宮澤) 宮沢 is Notable.

Miyazawa Kiichi was born in Tokyo on 8 October 1919, the son of Miyazawa Yutaka and Ogawa Koto. His father was a member of the Diet and his maternal grandfather, Ogawa Heikichi, served in the cabinet. He attained a degree of law from Tokyo Imperial University.

In 1942, Kiichi avoided military service during the Pacific War by joining the ministry of finance. In 1953, he was elected to the Diet, where he served in numerous government positions, including his position as finance minister.

While studying in the United States, Kiichi married Ijichi Yōko. He had two children during that marriage.

On 5 November 1991, Kiichi was elected Prime Minister of Japan through his own faction. On 8 January 1992, he gained a brief period of fame when George H. W. Bush fainted after vomiting on Kiichi's lap during a state dinner. In 1993, Kiichi resigned as prime minister after losing a no-confidence vote, ending the 38-year rule of his party since the accession of Hatoyama Ichirō as prime minister. His party, however, returned to power one year later.

Kiichi returned to politics when he was appointed finance minister for the final time in 1998, throughout the governments of Obuchi Keizō and his successor. After serving fourteen terms in the Diet, Kiichi retired in 2003. He died in Tokyo on 28 June 2007.
