John Starr Moats was born about July of 1828 in Virginia.
John Moats married Euniese A Vandervort in Ritchie, West Virginia. It is not totally clear when the marriage occurred. One record, with no image, states they were married in 1849[1], which seems likely as they appear together in the 1850 census. Other records, showing a typed record clearly compiled later, indicates they married on 6 December 1850[2]. Perhaps the date was 6 December 1849, but further research is needed.
In the 1850 census John Moats (age 22) was in Ritchie, Virginia.[3] Jacob (50) & Mary Moats are living nextdoor. J. J. (27) & Martha Vandivert are living nearby. J. J. is a sadler. Could he be Eunice's older brother?

In the 1856 Iowa state census John Moats (age 27) was recorded as married in Flint River, Des Moines, Iowa.[4] It appears John's household inluded 3 of Eunice's siblings.

John Moats was listed in Civil War Draft Registration records in Jefferson, Iowa, in June of 1863.[6] Born in Virginia, he was then 34 years of age.
In the 1870 census John Moats (age 41) was the head of household in Osage Township, Crawford, Kansas.[7] At the same time Eunice was apparently running a boarding house with the children in Nishnabotna, Atchison, Missouri.[8]

Newspaper Article in The Pittsburg Daily Headlight, Pittsburg, Kansas, Wednesday, August 01, 1900[12]:
- "Rev. J. N. Moats, pastor of the M E. church at Pickering, Mo., and his brother, James E. Moats, called yesterday to renew old acquaintances. They are sons of John Moats, who formerly lived here, but now out near Cow Creek, who is supposed to be on his death bed. Two sisters are also here."
Death notice in The Cherokee Sentinel, Cherokee, Kansas, Friday, August 24, 1900[13]:
- "Dr. John Moats died at his home on Cow creek on Wednesday morning. He was 72 years old and formerly lived in Cherokee. We hope to get an obituary before another issue."
