Biography

John Maffitt Sr. was born on 16 December 1767 born in County Cork, Ireland.

In 1775, William and his brother John were orphaned. In November 1775, the Rowan County Court bonded the two brothers, aged 8 and 10, respectively, as apprentices to George Davidson of Fort Davidson.

Marriage

John Maffit married Sarah Wheteker (The correct spelling of the surname) on 13 April 1790 in Rowan, Bladen, North Carolina, United States.[1][2] Bondsman: William Wheteker (The correct spelling of the surname), Witness: Basil Gaither.

John Maffitt Sr. died on 24 August 1854 at Old Fort, McDowell, NC, at age 86; buried at the Ebenezer United Methodist Cemetery.

Many online family trees give his parents as James Moffett and Sarah Donahoe without sources. Looked for the birth of Sarah, daughter of Henry Donahoo and his wife Racheal Smithson, without success - couldn’t find anything on FindMyPast or FamilySearch or Ancestry. Looked for a marriage of James Moffett and Sarah Donahoe, without success - couldn’t find anything on FindMyPast or FamilySearch or Ancestry. Looked for the birth of John Moffett, without success - couldn’t find anything on FindMyPast, FamilySearch or Ancestry. For this reason, he has been detached from his unverified mother, Sarah Donahoe. They can be reattached if sources are found.
