Grandfather Rudolph Mohler was born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, February 26, 1801.
As near as can be found, by information received, about the year 1839 or 1840, Grandfather and Grandmother came to Ohio on horseback. Grandmother rode on a side-saddle (which is in the possession of one of her granddaughters, Elizabeth Fisher)
At this time Grandfather purchased a farm located two and one-half miles south of Covington, Ohio, on the west side of the Stillwater and north of where Painter Creek empties into the river. They shortly returned East for their family.
In the Spring of 1841, Grandfather, Grandmother and family, together with Grandfather's brother, Samuel Mohler and family, Grandmother's brother, David Miller and family, emigrated from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, to Miami County, Ohio.
The three families made the trip in covered wagons, in about four weeks' time. Grandfather and the oldest children, with such household goods as they could bring, were in the covered wagon; and Grandmother followed in a horse-drawn carriage (called a "jagger" in those days). With Grandmother in the carriage were my father, Rudolph, aged two years, Uncle Daniel, about six months, and Aunt Susannah, whose age was about seven years old. Her part was to watch the little boys while Grandmother and the older girls prepared food and made camp.
In those days the roads were poorly constructed, being mud, corduroy and some gravel. Most of the streams had to be forded, which took a lot of time in finding a safe place to cross.
MOHLER - Died in the Covington Church, Ohio, November 10th, 1880, Brother and Elder, Rudolph Mohler, aged 79 years, 8 months, and 15 days.
