Digital Afterlife

It may seem morbid, but in the event of my untimely demise I want to be sure that none of my hard work on WikiTree ends up being deleted. Wow You have added a lot to [[Van_Oppen-22|Piers van Oppen} as soon as I suggested that he was born in the Netherlands. Sadly his only son Piers Willem Van Oppen died in action in the last year of the First World War.

I'd never heard of you before B.J. but I see you added to my grandfather's profile a death date that definitely is not right. Valentin Brenk. I can't remember what year it was but I think maybe the 1980s or 1990s. He definitely did not make it to 101. I don't even know how to find out. There's so much about my ancestral history that I will never know because my parents are long dead, and those who would've known are also gone.

I'm sorry to hear that. The date of his birth was mentioned on the marriage record, as you can see in the Sources section. These are the details that can be found in the Dutch civil registers. The date of death was entered when the profile was created on December 31, 2020. You can check my changes on the page https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:NetworkFeed&who=Brenk-41

Hi

Re your merge proposal Catherine Crapp (Arthur-2549), I agree that this is the same person, and needs to be merged. However due to the need to research other family members to update their profiles and add missing members, together with merging her father, I will not be actioning the merge immediately.

Hello Mr. Molier: After reading about your interests in the Wikitree family news I decided to reach out to you with a Dutch question from Canada. My ancestors (Mills) have been in Moncton, New Brunswick since 1784 when they were kicked out of the U.S. for remaining loyal to the British Crown. In the Canadian census documents, they identified themselves as "English". But in the 1901 census, for some reason, they self-identified as "Dutch." In your experience, have you ever come across this kind of thing before? (My great grandfather Amasa Miller Mills: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mills-4984). I do not really expect you to have an answer, but perhaps you have some ideas? Thanks. Jonathan
posted by Jonathan Mills
Hi Jonathan, I have not seen this before. However, when I saw an episode of the BBC-program "A house through time", there was a story about an English woman that married a German man in Newcastle during the 1910s. By marrying her nationality became German and in 1914 the great war began, she was an alien in her own hometown. Maybe this was the case with your g-grandmother?

You are good at making connections and thought you might like this challenge - these unsourced, unlinked profiles look like probable children of the same parents. But I am not finding anything for them right now... http://wikitree.sdms.si/default.htm?report=srch1&Query=19cen+netherlands+unlinked+unsourced+gedcomjunk+orphan&MaxProfiles=500&SortOrder=BiDa&PageSize=500

Hi,

Sorry for the late reaction. Here are the other sources I found concerning https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/De_Wit-905

The death notice of her mother in 1849 in Jabeek. This mentions a different writing form of her father's name as well as her mother's parents. https://www.openarch.nl/rhl:5434d99a-8db9-9566-a62e-5f2c41837fb7

Besides this, I sadly haven't found anything yet.

One of my projects is looking at 19cen US Netherlands orphans, by creation date, to source as needed. I am not sure I will ever get out of Nov 2010. So many abandoned unsourced profiles, many in Little Chute! I just keep running into Little Chute but otherwise know nothing about the families. I think a lot of Catholic Dutch moved there, at least more than came to Iowa.

Sure, but I was lucky this time. I recognized Little Chute, Wisconsin as a place with a fair number of WikiTree profiles AND FamilySearch had details on the families so I kept poking around until I found another family on WikiTree

I think I have connected the family - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Vanderheiden-56 to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Peters-9617 in 5 profiles.

Voorlopig nog bezig met een paar Zuid-Hollandse takken. Misschien volgende week weer verder in Limburg :-)
