Fred went to Oregon with his father when he was 17, and worked in his father's brewery. He met and married Catherine (Kate) Stewart in 1881, and they had two children there, Herbert and Brenda. He returned to Montreal with his family in 1889, where they had three more children.
Fred initially worked for a Consumers Cordage Company when he returned to Montreal. When his uncle John HR Molson died, he joined Molson brewery, and modernized it, introducing electricity in .
Fred became president of Molsons Bank in 1921. Molsons merged with the Bank of Montreal in 1925.
Fred died of a stroke February 5, 1929.
