William le Molyneux,[1] or Molineux[2] (dvp. 1358), was the son of Richard le Molineux of Sefton[2] and Agatha. His mother's parentage is disputed. Visitations states that she was the daughter of Roger de Sefton but Lewis (2020), asserts that she may have been the daughter of Roger Kryton.
William de Molyneux married Margaret Hetton. Alternatively, William married Joan de Holande , the daughter of Robert de Holande of Eukeston.[1]
William had children:
William "died in parts beyond the sea at Chateauneuf en Thimerais (Castrum Noef in Tymer') and, as the jury understand, on Monday after St Michael in 32 Edward III",[1] 1358. Michaelmas, the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, is celebrated on 29 September, although it was once celebrated on either 10 or 11 October.
Alternatively, William died in 1 October 1358 in Canterbury, Kent, England.[citation needed]
On 14 December, 32 Edward III, a writ was issued to the duke of Lancaster, or his chancellor or deputy, regarding William, son of Richard le Molyneux of Sefton, to which Henry duke of Lancaster replied that he had his excheator seize the lands and tenements contained in the writ into the king's hand and taken an Inquisition.[1] The Inquisition was held at Preston in Lancaster on 31 July, 33 Edward III, before Geoffrey de Wrightynton, and found that the deceased, William, son of Richard, had held the manor of Layrbrek, which his father gave to him and his wife Joan, the daughter of Robert de Holande of Eukeston, and their heirs male, and was held of the lordship late of William de Coucy by knight's service.[1] William's heir was his son William, aged 12 years.[1]
This William was not lord of the manor of Sefton as he predeceased his father. An Inquisition held in Lyverpul in response to a writ issued on 4 February 1368 found Richard le Molyneux died on 6 April, 37 Edward III [1363]; the issues of his properties had gone to the duke of Lancaster during the minority of his grandson, William son of William son of Richard le Molineux; Richard was succeeded by his grandson, William son of William, who had done homage to the duke of Lancaster on Michaelmas, 40 Edward III [1366], as son and heir of William le Molyneux and had livery of the manor of Sefton, part of the manor of Doune Lithirlond and interests in Thorneton.[2]
