Mary Ann Money was born in the 1st Quarter of 1856 (Jan-Feb-Mar) to Daniel and Mary Ann Money (Money-528 and Thompson-68500) at Great Snoring, Norfolk[1].
The 1861 Census of England and Wales, taken 7 April, 1861, for the Parish of Great Snoring, Norfolk, recorded Mary Ann, 5, a Scholar, living at 93 Church Street with her parents, Daniel, 35, an Agricultural Labourer, and Mary Ann, 36, and siblings John (Money-532), 3, and Charlotte, 7 mos. The Census shows all the household's residents were born in Great Snoring[2].
Mary Ann's brother John died in June, 1863 at Great Snoring. Sometime after John's death, but before the birth of her sister Maria in October, 1864, the family moved to New Hartley, Northumberland, England, presumably for economic reasons. The industrial revolution was resulting in a decreased need for agricultural labourers in England due to increasing mechanization of agriculture, at the same time as the New Hartley Mine disaster of 1862, where 204 miners died, led to a recruitment campaign for men to work as miners[3]. This likely correlation of events is supported by the 1871 Census Records for the Money family, which recorded them living at 20 Double Row in the Village of Seaton Delaval Colliery, Parish of Seaton Delaval, Northumberland, next to the Partis family at 21 Double Row. Mary Ann's father, Daniel, 44, was working as a Coal Miner in the Colliery, while her brother, William, 16, was a Clerk in the Colliery Office. Her mother, Mary Ann, 43, and Mary Ann, 15, have no listed occupations, while Charlotte, 10, her brother James, 8, and sister Maria L, 6, were all Scholars, and sister Susannah, was just 1 year old[3].
Mary Ann Money married Charles Edward Partis at Tynemouth in the 1st Quarter of 1879 (Jan-Feb-Mar)[4].
Mary Ann and Charles had 7 children, according to the 1911 Census, but we only have documentation for 6, all born in Seaton Delaval, Northumberland:
At the time of the 1881 Census, Mary Ann, 24, and Charles Partis, 23, Coal Miner, and their daughter Emily E., 1, were living with Mary Ann's parents Daniel, 55, Coal Miner, and Mary A. Money, 54, and brothers William, 26, Colliery Clerk, and James, 18, Coal Miner, at 20 Double Row, Seaton Delaval, Northumberland[5].
By the time of the 1891 Census, Mary Ann, 35, and Charles E. Partis, 33, Coal Miner, are living in their own home at 58 Double Row, Seaton Delaval. Emily is either visiting or living with her maternal Grandparents at the time of the Census, but the other children, James, 9, and Maria, 6, both Scholars, Florance J., 5, and Frederick, 6 mos., are at home with their parents[6].
By 1901, Mary Ann, 45, and Charles, 43, a Coal Screener above ground, are living at 34 Double Row, Seaton Delaval. Living with them are Emily E., 21, William J., 18, a Wagon Greaser above ground, Maria, 16, Florence J., 15, Frederick, 10, and Mary Ann's father Daniel, now widowed and retired, his last job having been Colliery Cartman[7].
By 1911, Mary Ann, 55, and Charles, 53, had been married 32 years. They were still living at 34 Double Row, Seaton Delaval, where Charles was a Colliery Labourer above ground. They stated that they had had 7 children of the marriage, 5 of whom were still living. Also in the household were Emily E., 31, Florence J., 25, and Frederick, 20, also a Colliery Labourer above ground[8].
Mary Ann was predeceased by Charles on 28 January 1934, and died herself on 2 April of the same year. Their address at the time of their deaths, according to their probate records, which appear next to each other in the Probate Calendar for 1934, was 11 Baxter Place, Seaton Delaval, Northumberland.[9]. Probate for both was granted to William Mark Frazer, Drapery Manager.
Mary Ann & Charles had 7 children. One is missing, and never appears on a Census so must have been born and died between Censuses:
Partis, Charles; Age: 0; Reg. Dist.: Tynemouth; Vol. 10b; p. 144.
