Joseph was born in 1834. He was christened on 15 July 1838. [1]
By July 1857 he had started business as an Auctioneer and General Agent in the York, Northam, Toodyay Districts.
In May 1858 he was trading as a General Storekeeper in York taking over the premises previously occupied by Mrs Hamer. He had also leased the New Steam Mill from his father and was carrying on the business of Miller.
He married Mary Jane Craig on 4 March 1862.[2]
They had five children.
He and his brother J. H. "Henry" Monger were business rivals in York. By 1860 he was auctioneer & agent at York conducting Bland Town Stores against competing against his father and elder brother. Joseph built a Hotel and Steam Mill at the S.E. end of Newcastle (Toodyay) in the 1860s. [3] The hotel was licensed in 1863 as the Newcastle Hotel. He sold the premises to his cousin C S Monger in 1873.
He moved to York and appears to have carried on business as an agent / merchant dealing in property and grain.
In 1878 he was Chairman of the York Roads Board and also Chairman of York Municipal Council. In 1870 he ran for the position of M.L.C. Toodyay. He held the position of M.L.C. for York from 1875 to 1880 having taken over the position from his brother J.H. in a By Election.
DEATH NOTICE. DEATH OF MR. J. T. MONGER AT YORK. [BY TELEGRAPH.] (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) YORK, April 14. Mr. Joseph Taylor Monger, one of the best known settlers in the Eastern districts, died at his residence at eleven o'clock last night, from heart disease. The deceased gentleman, who, at the time of his death, was fifty-seven years of age, came to York when he was very young. All his life he was identified with all public movements for the good of the community,and for many years ocoupied the position of Chairman of the Roads Board. He had also been Chairman of the York Municipal Council. He was buried at five o'clock this afternoon with Masonic honours, the Masonic rites being performed by Bro. R. Hardman. The funeral was largely attended, and the pall-bearers were Mr. G. Meares, J.P., Mr. F. Stokes, Mr. C. Edwards, J.P., and Mr. B. G. Burges, J.P. The deceased gentleman was married to a daughter of the late Mr. S. Craig, who with a son and two daughters survive him.
