Biography

John Thomas Edward was born on 28 November 1909 at Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, the son of Thomas George Monk and Ellen Eliza Johnson.

In the 1911 census John was living with his parents at Yewtree Lane, Rowley Regis. He was aged 1 year.

John's father Thomas George Monk died in 1917 when John was aged only 7 years.

His mother remarried to George Tranter in 1920.

John Thomas Edward Monk married Nora Jane Evans in 1934 at St. Giles Church, Rowley Regis.

This couple had one child.

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.

At that time John and Nora were residing at 67 Highbury Avenue, Rowley Regis. John, aged 29, was working as a carpenter. Nora was also aged 29. Her date of birth was recorded as 6 October 1909. The record for their child remains closed at this time [2017].

Laura Johnson, wife of Edward Gadd Johnson [John's maternal uncle] died on 6 September 1959. The pallbearers at her funeral were Messrs. S. Dunn [Samuel Dunn, Edward's brother in law], J. Monk [this man], S. Price and A. Smith. Laura’s funeral was held at the Reddal Hill Methodist Church.

John Thomas Edward Monk died in 1995 aged about 86 years [Death Oct 1995/Stourbridge SA10F 0661A 51 – DOB 28 Nov 1909].

Nora Jane Monk died on 4 April 2002 aged 92 years [Death Apr 2002/Birmingham F14B 0611F 73 – DOB 6 Oct 1909].
