Maria was born in 1816. Daughter of William Monk and Isabella Mills. She passed away in 1849.

Her father was a noncommissioned soldier stationed in Montreal. After his death, Isabella cleaned houses in the army camp. The children, four sons and Maria, were raised as Protestants.[1]

Canadian author who claimed to have lived in a nunnery which shared an unusual relationships with priests.

Two children - one born before 1836 (William?), supposedly fathered by Abbé Patrick Phelan. and Oliver in 1838 (father unknown). She married shortly thereafter, but he abandoned her after she spent his money.
