Australian journalist and war correspondent, covering the Italian invasion of Abyssinia (Ethiopia) in 1935, then heading to Madrid the next year to cover the Spanish Civil War. Franco ejected him, and he made his way to Bilbao where he became one of the few foreign journalists embedded with the Basque forces. He narrowly escaped being killed in Guernica in April 1937 when his car was strafed by machinegun fire from aircraft.
His wife Mary left him for Ernest Hemingway, and the bad feelings between the two men were so bad that Hemingway placed a photograph of Monks on a toilet bowl in the Paris Ritz and shot at it with a machinegun. [2]
