DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Rachel by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Rachel:

Rachel Monroe or Valentine? A note attached to the profile for Ichabod stated: "A document has been found of Ichabod Valentine mentioning his son-in-law, Joshua Pettit." I have not been able to find who, if anyone, has this note.

I am familiar with both traditions and have documented them in circulation among genealogists to the early 20th century but have no primary sources that confirm a link to either family. Not saying there is no connection, I just haven't seen any thing to confirm it yet.

Joshua Pettit (of Virginia and SC) was indeed married twice, first to a Hannah and then to a Rachel.

I have done quite a bit of research in Hampshire/Hardy Co., VA but not documented any connection between him and the Monroe families. (I did find a surprising connection between him and William Poole who was also in Virginia.) Could you please elaborate on the Virginia area Monroe connection you found? I'd like to explore this myself but don't have a starting point.

I don't know where you have a record to prove Rachel last name was Valentine. The will of Hannah wife of Ichabod does not name Henry or Hannah as her grandchildren.. Joshua Pettit was married twice. He came from Long Island, and first married Hannah unknown and then removed to Virginia were I find a Monroe family that he had some connection to.. the Hembree researchers were correct Joshua was married to Rachel Monroe

Have you tried taking out all references to Monroe as her surname in the biography?

Can someone tell me how to remove the surname "Monroe" from Rachel Pettit and how to change her parents? There should be an easier way.

When information is not documented we can spend years on an incorrect surname. Yates, according to group sheets, has NO documentation as to Rachel's surname. She is listed both as a Valentine and a Monroe.

My records show her as being born in Ulster CO NY.

There is no Essex CO SC. Joshua and Rachel were in Essex CO NJ before removing to SC. Their oldest children were born in NJ. The 3 Rachels in Yates records is the same Rachel. The Yates records appear to be incorrect. Their records appear to be from family group sheets submitted by individuals. It looks like Rachel could the daughter of Ichabod Valentine and Hannah Stanbury. Ichabod was the son of Ephraim Valentine and Rachel Ellison. The Valentine family appear everywhere I find the Thomas Pettit descendants. Do not accept the above as fact until I can find more proof.

There are 3 Rachels in these Yates records. One born in NJ in 1736, one in Ulster in 1736 (Spouse listed as Joshua Valentine, she as Pettit) and one born in SC in 1735. I've tried to look up Essex, SC and can't find it. Did Essex, SC ever exist.

I did some research on George Monroe and Ann Osborne.

The people that have this research have Rachel Pettit b. in Rutherford CO NC. Rutherford CO NC was created in 1779. The biggest surprise of all they have Rachel being the step-mother of all of the children of Joshua Pettit. How could Rachel Monroe who married Joshua Pettit in NJ being born in Rutherford CO NC. I have no record of Joshua and Rachel being in Rutherford CO NC as they were both deceased when Rutherford CO was created. Henry's family did not go to Rutherford CO until after 1800. We need to take Monroe off until we can prove her surname. Henry's war record had bible pages showing the Joshua and Rachel were his PARENTS. He does not say Rachel is his step mother.

I have researched this line for over 30 years and I can find no documentation that Rachel was a Monroe. If she was a daughter of George Monroe, why did she not name a child "George". I was at the Pettit Cemetery in Spartanburg yesterday and work is desperately needed on the cemetery. I would love to see documentation as to her maiden name.
