Biography

Eleanor Ellender Monroe was born in 1792 in Kentucky as it became a state in the union of the United States. Her father was William Monroe (1771-1840) and mother Agatha Agnes West (1770-1840). Her father was a settler in the Virginia Colonies where he married Agnes and set up home. It was a large family of nine children. The family moved to Missouri at the time the Douglass family moved to Howard County, Missouri. She married James Simeral Douglass and they had nine children together. She also had three sons from another relationship.[1] For many years the family was compelled to seek protection of Ft. Kincaid due to Indian hostilities in the region. When those ceased the family bought property in Howard Co., MO, which was sold in 1836, and moved to Rives Co. (now Henry Co.), then to Jefferson Twp, Johnson Co., MO, just inside the county line. The families of this period were farmers and worked the land and developed homesteads. He sold his Henry Co property to John Woodard who owned it in 1883. To learn more of the heroics of these pioneer families, further information can be found at the American History & Genealogy Project or specifically [1]. She died on November 21, 1865, in Windsor, Missouri, at the age of 73.
