Edward Montagu was the eldest son of Edward, 2nd Earl of Sandwich and his wife, Anne Boyle, born on 10 April 1670.

He married Elizabeth Wilmot, daughter of John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester and Elizabeth Malet, on 8 July 1689.

He died 20 October 1729 after twenty years retired at Hinchingbrooke House due to his insanity.
