Harry farmed in the Gore of Downie Township.
When he first started on his own in 1877, ownership of Lot 8, Concession 9 passed to him from his father; however, he and his brother, John Nelson, then exchanged properties and Harry moved to Lot 8, Concession 7.[1]
After about ten years of farming, Harry married his first cousin, Margaret Monteith. They had a child in April of 1890. Tragically, Margaret and the child both died. Soon after that, Harry moved a couple of lots south along the Embro Road to Lot 7, Concession 8. Indeed, his funeral was held in the house there.[2]
As was common at the time, Harry worked with his neighbours. In his diary records next door neighbour, Tom Loghrin , noted that Harry helped him with many things such as: shearing sheep, hewing logs, dehorning cattle, laying oil cloth in the new house, building cabinets and castrating pigs. Tom went to Harry's to fill silo and for threshing bees.[3]
