2 Sep 1792: Mary Mogumery, daughter of Jesse and Sarah, christened at Petworth, Sussex, England.^[1]

22 Sep 1813: Marriage of John Philips and Mary Gumree at Chiddingfold, Surrey, England.^[2] Marriage was by banns. Parties are described as bachelor and spinster of this parish. Witnesses were Thomas Philips and Mary Philips. All parties made their marks. Bride's surname is spelt Gumree. This is not the only instance of the first syllable of this family's surname being omitted - sister Hannah also appears to have married as Gumrey (at Chiddingfold, in 1816), and in the christening record of brother James' child Jane in 1827, he is recorded as 'Gummery or Montgomery'. There are also a number of instances in the previous two generations.

Research Notes

Surname at the christening is spelt Mogumery, and parents are given as Jesse and Sarah. Perhaps this spelling is a pointer to how her family pronounced their surname, i.e. without sounding the "nt". If so, it would be a fairly small step towards swallowing the first syllable altogether, of which there are a number of instances - see under her marriage, for example.
