Born Marion Preston Montgomery, Preston did not like his first name and did his best to hide it during his life time. Only in a few places does the Marion make its presence known. An example is his tombstone where it appears as his middle initial.

Preston was born in 1894 in the town of Buchanan, Botetourt, Virginia to John William Montgomery and Sarah Angeline (Sadie) Dodd. His family moved Wayne, Hamilton, Indiana by 1900 and settled in Lapel, Madison, Indiana by 1910.
In 1913 he married Lena Ledbetter. Lena bore him three children, two boys and a girl. The eldest was a boy, Walter M. Montgomery, the second a daughter, Fern N. Montgomery who did not survive, and the youngest as second son, Carroll McKinley Montgomery
Preston made his living as a glass blower at Sterling Glass Co. He was minister in the also referred to as a Reverend several times towards the end of his life.
In the summer of 1928 Preston suffered an intussusception: two feet of the small bowel slipping into the large bowel. Preston under went operation immediately, but did not survive. He passed away before 9 Jun 1928.
