Biography

Daughters of the American Revolution
Alexander Montgomery is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A078944.

Son of Hugh Montgomery and his wife, Jane (Unknown). Refer to marriage source below for name "Jane".

He served in the Revolutionary War as evidenced by three approved applications to DAR citing his service as a Private in Capt George Worley's unit under Col William Henderson's 6th Regiment in South Carolina submitted by descendants of his sons by his second marriage to Lydia Swayze: James Jefferson Montgomery and Prosper King Montgomery. After his father died in 1783, Alexander left for the Mississippi Territory. In 1793 he was granted 500 arpents of land on Thompson's Creek in Adams County, Mississippi.

He died in 1812 in Natchez, Adams Co., Mississippi.

Probate records for 6 Apr 1812 show he died intestate leaving wife Lydia. The Adams County Orphans Court appointed Lydia Montgomery and Samuel Ross administrator of his estate. The Executive Bond of the same date names Lydia Montgomery, Prosper King, William Montgomery, Samuel Montgomery, Richard King and Daniel Fowler in the sum of $64,000.

In the 1816 Census for Adams County, his estate is listed with 36 enslaved individuals. In the 1830 Census his son Prosper King Montgomery is accounted for with 22 enslaved individuals.
