Biography

Anna Catherine Montgomery was born on October 30, 1860 to Cornelius Montgomery and Elizabeth Campbell in Roxborough, Stormont, Ontario, Canada.[1]

According to the census of 1900, Anna arrived in the United States in 1876.[2] It is possible Anna was a domestic servant for the Rose family in Parishville in 1880, as there is an Ann Montgomery born in Canada listed with the Rose family in the 1880 census.[3]

In December 1880, Anna married Walter Alexander Cook.[1] The couple's first two children, Grace Cook and Myrtle Anna Cook, were born in Parishville in 1882 and 1884, respectively. Grace Cook died as an infant in 1882.[1]

Letters written to Anna indicate the family relocated to Bridgeport, Fairfield, Connecticut sometime around 1885 because the envelopes are addressed to "Mrs. Walter A. Cook" at 81 Johnson Street in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The family remained in Bridgeport for a few years; the couple's third child, Walter Alexander Cook Jr, was born in Bridgeport in 1887.

At some point, the family returned to Parishville where the couple's daughters, Goldie Grace Cook and Vina Alzina Cook, were born in 1889 and 1894, respectively.

According to the New York State Census of 1905, the United States Census of 1910, the New York State Census of 1915, and the United States Census of 1920, Anna lived with Walter Alexander Cook and their children in Parishville, St. Lawrence, New York.[4] [5] [6] [7]

After the death of Walter Alexander Cook, Anna lived with her daughter Vina Alzina Cook in Parishville between 1925 up until Anna's death in 1940.[8] [9] [10]

Anna passed away on May 4, 1940 in Parishville. On May 15, 1940, an obituary for Anna was published in the Courier & Freeman of Potsdam:

"Mrs. Ann Montgomery Cook passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Herbert Thomas on School street Saturday, May 4th. The funeral services were conducted from the Thomas residence at 2 o'clock, May 6th. Rev. Frank H. Phillipson, pastor of the Union church, officiated. Mrs. Floyd A. Fenner rendered two solos, "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" and "God Will Take Care of You." Interment was made in Hillcrest cemetery. The bearers were Scott Cook, Glen Spear, William Emlin and Harry Emlin. Mrs. Cook was born Oct. 30, 1860 to Cornelius and Elizabeth Campbell Montgomery at Monckland, Canada. Her marriage to Walter A. Cook of this place occurred in December, 1880 at Potsdam. To them were born five children, Grace who passed away in early infancy, Mrs. Myrtle Henessey, Walter A. Cook, and Miss Goldie Cook all now of Potsdam and Vina, Mrs. Herbert Thomas of this village with whom she had made her home for many years. Mr. Cook passed away several years ago. She is survived by nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The deceased was of a large family having two sisters, three brothers, four half sisters and one half brother, none of whom survive her. Mrs. Cook had been in failing health since Easter. Her great fortitude and patience in her suffering was most commendable."[1]

She was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery with her husband, Walter Alexander Cook, in Parishville, St Lawrence, New York. [11]
