Biography

Son of James A. and Martha (Kirk) Montgomery.

Marriages:

1 - Mariah Williams on December 7, 1843 in Madison County, Tennessee. Mariah died in 1847.

One son: James Alexander Montgomery (b. 1845)

2 - Elizabeth Tabitha Hopper on February 23, 1848 in Madison County, Tennessee.

Children: Elennoro, Ann, William, Albert, Hugh, Charles, Martha, and James.

Hugh Montgomery came to Madison County with his parents in the 1820's and remained in the same area all of his life. He appears to be a man of some means. Legal papers found show he is appointed the Guardian of his son, James, when his wife died as well as the children of David and John McEwen. The 1860 Census shows he has $10,000 real estate and $13,000 personal estate.

Death:

Hugh Montgomery died in February 1868. He signed his LW&T on February 18, 1868. It was presented for probate in March 1868.

He is buried in the Montgomery Cemetery, now considered lost. He requested that no grave marker be placed for him.
