Son of James A. and Martha (Kirk) Montgomery.
It seems that James never married and always cared for his mother and sisters. From the US Census, this Montgomery family seems to live all in the same area of District 11 in Madison County, Tennessee.
Death:
James died on October 19, 1875 at the age of 61. He was buried in the Montgomery family cemetery, now considered a lost cemetery.
Obituary -- Whig and Tribune, October 23, 1875, page 2
Died, at his residence in this county, October 19th, Mr. Jas. M. Montgomery, aged 62 years. He was one of the first settlers of this section, and enjoyed great popularity among his neighbors on account of his goodness of heart and purity of life. He was always a friend of this paper, tried and true, and procured us several clubs of subscribers and that too without remuneration. We sincerely regret his death and feel assured that he has gone to a better land. Peace to his ashes.
His Will and Estate papers indicate that he left his homestead to his niece, Sallie McEwen and the remainder to his siblings or their children. All family members are named in these papers and give confirmation to their connection, including the two Bell sisters.
