He was a Democrat and his twin brother a Whig. The two parties in Gibson County, Ind., nominated them for the legislature. Thomas was defeated in this race. However, he was a very prominent and popular man. He was elected county commissioner in 1817. In 1820 he was elected one of the associate judges of Gibson county, and continuously elected to that office for 26 years.[2]
On 25 Oct 1797, Thomas married Elizabeth Warrick, and they settled on the "old James Stewart farm" in Montgomery Township. They had ten children over the next twenty years.[3]
Thomas served in the War of 1812. He died about 1847, in Gibson County, Indiana.
Research Notes
↑ The date is from Trimble (1992, p. 155). Monty Hist Notes says 25 Oct, and Find a Grave, 20 Oct. David Montgomery (1903, p. 249) gives only a year, 1876, an obvious typographical error.
↑ Tartt (1884. p. 53) and Stormont (1914. p. 47-48) both mention only six children, in the same order, without dates: Polly, Nelly, Moses, Nancy, Jacob and Thomas. Montgomery (1903, p. 249-253) mentions the same six in a different order, adding birth years. French & Armstrong (1928, p. 187) repeat Montgomery's list. Turman (1981, p. 242) notes Montgomery's omission of four additional children born to the couple: Patsy, Malinda, John and Elizabeth, and provides the dates shown here. Trimble (1992, p. 155) follows Turman. The list at MontyHistNotes errs in including two Eleanor/Nellies and two Elizabeth/Betseys; the list at CMSI errs in including two Mary/Pollys and two Thomases.
↑ Montgomery, 1903, p. 253-256. French & Armstrong (1928, p. 188) do not mention Catherine.
