Biography

Nancy Montgomery was born in Gibson County, Indiana, in 1813, the seventh child of Judge Joseph Montgomery and Nancy Davis. Nancy married the widow Henry Gambrel sometime after his first wife died, in 1836. Together they had four children.[1]

  1. Maria (Gambrel) Wilhite (1840-1921)
  2. Martha (Gambrel) Combs
  3. Mary (Gambrel) Poe (abt.1844-1917)
  4. Miranda (Gambrel) Rigg (1852-1924)

Nancy died in 1862 and is buried with her husband at Emerson Hill Cemetery, Owensville, Indiana.

Research Notes

The Clan Montgomery Genealogy Database gives Nancy's dates as b. 1811 and d. 12 Aug 1865. Her headstone gives only the death date, 12 Oct 1862 and age at death of 48 years, 8 ms, 14 ds, which gives a calculated birth date of 28 Oct 1813. The 1811 birth date apparently originates from D.B. Montgomery, the only source cited in the Clan Montgomery record.[2] The source of the 1865 death date is unknown. Turman, possibly guided by the headstone, concords with the 1862 death date, when he says that Nancy died 13 years before her husband, who died in 1875.[3]
