Biography

Robert C. Montgomery was born 23 Apr 1762 in Augusta (now Botetourt) County, Virginia, the son of Samuel Montgomery and Margaret Nichols. About 1770, the family moved to Botetourt (now Wythe) County.[1] According to David Montgomery,[2]

Robert Montgomery was a soldier of the Revolution and fought in the Battle of Guilford's Courthouse, where he was severely wounded and left for dead on the battlefield.

Robert married three times, having children with all three wives. He first married Mary Love, on 10 Sep 1784, in then Montgomery County, Virginia, at age 24. By 1789, the couple had settled in Woodford (now Franklin) County, Kentucky,[3] where their two children were born.[4]

  1. Sarah "Sallie" (Montgomery) Montgomery (1789-1863)
  2. John Montgomery (1791-1872)

After Mary died, John married Rachel Bohannon, on 22 Apr 1798, in Gallatin County, Kentucky, the day before his 36th birthday.[5] Together, they had seven children.[4]

  1. Robert Montgomery (1799-1800)
  2. Hugh Montgomery (1800-1852)
  3. Mary "Polly" (Montgomery) Woods (1802-1844)
  4. Margaret "Peggy" (Montgomery) Knox (1805-1884)
  5. Frances (Montgomery) Jackson (1808-1844)
  6. Samuel H. Montgomery (1810-1885)
  7. Eleanor (Montgomery) Jackman (1814-1885)

Robert was once again left a widower at Rachel's death, and on 25 May 1819, at age 57, he married the widow Patsy Whitecotton, in Gallatin County, Kentucky.[5] Together, they had two children.[4]

  1. Joseph L Montgomery (1820- )
  2. Sarah Jane (Montgomery) Meek (1821-1890)

Robert died 8 Feb 1823 at age 60 in Rush County, Indiana, where he had moved shortly before.[6]

Research Notes

  1. Trimble, 1992, p. 292.
  2. Montgomery, 1903, p. 55.
  3. Trimble (1992, p. 292) says that Robert moved to Kentucky "in 1789", but given the fact that their daughter Sallie was born 6 Jan of that year and is recorded in the 1850 census as having been born in Kentucky, it is more likely that the move had taken place before 1789.
  4. 4.0 4.1 4.2 Montgomery, 1903, p. 56 and Trimble, 1992, p. 293.
  5. 5.0 5.1 Clemens, 1917, Vol. 2, No. 2 (October), 1916. "Kentucky Marriages (From Original Records)", p. 91.
  6. Trimble (1992, p. 292) mentions the move to Rush County, Indiana, but does not provide a date, only that Robert died there. Since Rush County was formed only in Apr 1821, and their youngest child, Sarah, was born in Kentucky in Sep of that year, they probably would not have moved to Indiana before 1822. Still, it is claimed that he was buried at Bohannon Cemetery, Bagdad, Shelby County, Kentucky, the locus indicated by a Find a Grave memorial, though no stone is found there.
