When Josephine was 2 years old, her family moved to Eaton Rapids, Eaton, Michigan where she grew up and became a school teacher. In 1862, with her parents, sisters, and one brother, they made there way to northern California on a wagon pulled by an ox team arriving the same year. Shortly afterwards, she married Thomas Holden. They lived on the south fork of the Pitt River in Lassen CA for 18 years. In 1880 they moved the family to a ranch west of Santa Paula, Ventura, CA. See the Thomas Holden profile for more details about her and the family.
Josephines grandfather, Thomas Montgomery, immigrated from Ireland during the time of the War of 1812 and had to remain in Canada for a few years to come into the US. He arrived about 1816 into Westmoreland, Oneida, NY and later went to Bennington, Wyoming, NY. His sons and descendants were adventurous and pioneering, moving to Eaton Michigan in the 1840s and settling in that area. Josephine's father was in charge of some Oregon Trail caravans and brought the family to settle in northern CA in 1862.
Josephine died less than two months before her husband Thomas.
