Biography

Garvey Montgomery was born in Appalachia, in Kentucky.

Garvey Montgomery was born on 7 Oct 1908 at Denniston, Menifee County, Kentucky, United States. He was the son of Silas Maxey Montgomery and Sarah Alice (Power(s)) Montgomery.

In the 1910 census Garvie (age 1) was the son of Sile Montgomery at Wellington, Menifee County, Kentucky, United States.^[1]

In the 1920 census Garvy (age 10) was the son of Silas Montgomery at Menifee County, Kentucky, United States.^[2]

In the 1930 census Garf (age 21) was the married son of Sile M Montgomery at Mariba, Menifee County, Kentucky, United States.^[3]

Garv married Mildred Wallen about 1930 based upon the birth of their first child in 1931. They were parents of five children:

1. Betty Kathryn (Montgomery) Baker (1931-bef. 2021)
2. Robert 'Bob' Montgomery (1933-2000)
3. Living daughter Montgomery (1939-living)
4. William 'Bill' Wayne Montgomery (1942-1985)
5. Bernard Law Montgomery (1943-2021)

In the 1940 census Garvey (age 31) was the married head of household at Magisterial District 2, Menifee County, Kentucky, United States.^[4]

Garv and Mildred resided at Middletown, Butler County, Ohio during their adult lives. Garv was employed at Dayton, Ohio with the Frigidaire division of General Motors. He and Mildred are seen in the Middletown Citiy Directories from 1946 to 1958 as homeowners at 126 Park St.^[5] In 1959 they are also seen as homeowners at their last residence at 723 Elwood Street.^[6]

Garvey was good friends with first cousin Clay Powers and they played cards together quite often, especially enjoying the game of Pinochle. The author recalls as a young child spending some Friday evenings watching television on the couch at Garv and Mildred's home while his father, grandfather and others played cards into the evening.

Garvey died (age 69) on 14 January 1978 at Middletown, Butler County, Ohio, United States.^[7][8]He was buried at Grace Memorial Gardens, Franklin Township, Warren County, Ohio, United States.^[9]

Mildred died in October 1995 at Middletown, Butler County, Ohio. She was buried beside Garvey at Grace Memorial Gardens, Franklin Township, Warren County, Ohio, United States.^[10]
