Biography

Elizabeth Monypenny was baptised on 26 March 1700.[1] She was the daughter of Alexander Monypenny, 20th of Pitmilly and Hon. Magdalene Erskine. Elizabeth Monypenny was born daughter of the deceased Alexander Monypenny of Pitmilly, and sister of Mr. David Monypenny of Pitmilly, advocate.[2][3]

Marriage to Alexander Leslie

She marries, as his second wife, dated 10 March 1726, an associate of her brother Alexander Leslie. They had 6 children; 2 boys and 4 girls. [4]

George, likely born 1728, and named in 1730 in a bond of provision by his father as then the only son to his second marriage. He seems to have died shortly after as no further reference is made to him.
Alexander Leslie, who was born in 1731. He entered the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards (the family custom) in 1753, and, obtaining rapid promotion (by purchase), became lieutenant-colonel of the 56th Regiment in 1766, after having served for a short time in the Marines. In 1774 he was in America. In 1775 he was appointed aide-de-camp to King George III., with the rank of colonel in the Army. In 1776 he was again in America, acting as brigadier-general under Sir William Howe. In 1780 he, with the rank of Major-General, joined Lord Cornwallis in North Carolina, and was at the battle of Guilford Court House in March 1781. Towards the end of the same year he was in command at Charleston, but on 27 May 1782 he obtained leave of absence on account of ill-health and returned to Scotland. For some years he was second in command of the Forces in Scotland. He died at Beechwood, near Edinburgh, 27 December 1794. He married, 23 December 1760, Mary Margaret, second daughter of Walter Tullideph of that Ilk in Forfarshire, who died 14 October 1761. They had one child, a girl:
Mary Anne. She was married, 30 April 1787, to John Rutherford of Edgerston. There were no children from the marriage.
Anne, born 27 February 1730 ; married, 30 April 1748, to George Carnegie, sixth Earl of Northesk, with issue. She died in Edinburgh 8 November 1779, aged fifty.
Elizabeth, born in March 1735; died young and before 1737.
Elizabeth, born in July 1737; married, 10 June 1767, to John Hope, second Earl of Hopetoun, and had issue. She survived her husband and died 10 April 1788, aged fifty-one.
Mary, born about 1740, married, in 1762, to Dr. James Walker of Innerdovat, in Fife, and had issue three sons and one daughter. She was alive in 1818. She seems to have been resident in Jamaica for correspondence suggests she was managing of the estate of "Success" in Jamaica.

Her death

She survived him, and died at Edinburgh 15 May 1783, aged eighty-four.

Burial

Fraser, in discussing her son, Alexander, suggests[5] that "He was interred in the burial-place of Nisbet of Dean, in the west church ayle, near his mother." This can only be presumed to be the Dean Cemetery, now also known as the Edinburgh Western Cemetery.
