Yes, my gggrandfather was the same one that was murdered in 1882. My grandfather (Willie Edward Monzingo 1890-1959) once said it was believed to have been the result of an argument over a saddle, and George ended up with his head split open with an ax. The suspected murderer was never apprehended. I do know that George Whitfield was married at least twice, but I do not have all my family records right now. ...Larry Wayne Monzingo.
Actually George was stabbed and chopped with an ax in his front yard by Tom Stanley. Found this info in the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals records.
Date: Sat, 29 Nov 2003 13:59:33 -0800 (PST) From: Larry Monzingo yahoo.com Regarding George Whitfield's death, the story that my father, Elton Edward "Boscoe" Monzingo, told me many years ago was that a man came to George's gate one evening, called him to come out, and the two of them argued about a saddle. The man then struck George in the head with an axe and fled. The murderer remains unidentified. To my knowledge, this story has never been confirmed. Larry Monzingo
