Wesley's parents died when he was a child. His father died of natural causes in 1912 and his mother died of a ruptured tubal pregnancy the following year. Read about the mystery surrounding May Moody's death. He was adopted by his paternal aunt Jessie Moody Ward and her husband after his mother died in 1913 so his surname was changed to Ward sometime between 1913 and 1920 when he is enumerated on the federal census as "Wesley Ward". Wesley's brother Robert was not adopted by the Wards so his surname remained Moody.
