Biography

Ann Moody was baptised 31 Jul 1710, the daughter of John Moody (spelled Meday) in Gilling East, in the North Riding of Yorkshire[1].

Ann Moody and Robert Banks were married in Gilling East parish, near Helmsley, in the North Riding of Yorkshire on 10 Jan 1735[2]. They were married for about 40 years, until Ann's death in 1775, after which Robert married Rachel Barker.

Based on records in this parish, Ann and Robert had seven children:

  • Mary Banks, baptised 28 Nov 1736[3];
  • Elizabeth Banks, baptised 6 Sep 1738 and buried 9 Oct 173[4];
  • Robert Banks, baptised 6 Sep 1738[5]; (Robert and Elizabeth may have been fraternal twins, as they were baptized together.)
  • Richard Banks, baptised 15 Feb 1741[6]; married 22 Aug 1767 in Lockton, Middleton Parish, North Riding of Yorkshire to Susannah Hopper[7]; buried 3 Feb 1826 in Hovingham, North Riding of Yorkshire.
  • John Banks, baptised 4 Apr 1743[8]; married 7 May 1771 to Elizabeth Taylor[9]; buried 6 Mar 1809[10] (all events in this parish);
  • William Banks, baptised 4 Apr 1743[11]; married 29 Jan 1767 in Burythorpe, East Riding of Yorkshire to Dinah Rase (aka Roise, Rose, Ross); buried 10 Oct 1831 in Thorpe Bassett, East Riding of Yorkshire;
  • Ann Banks, baptised 28 Jan 1750[12].

Ann (Moody) Banks was buried in Gilling on 24 Dec 1775, with this notation in the parish register: "Ann, wife of Robert Banks of Cawton."[13]

Research Notes

Disputed Origins

Marriage records show that Ann Moody married Robert Banks in Gilling East parish in the North Riding of Yorkshire, England, on 20 Jan 1735[2]. There are some differences in family trees, however, re: exactly who Ann Moody was.

Based on research in Yorkshire parish registers and the "simplest-is-best approach", whereby if a local candidate is available, they may be the most plausible -- it seems highly likely that Robert's wife is the daughter of John Moody (also spelled Meday, Mudey and Mudy) and Mary Marshall, who lived at Cawton, a quite small settlement with only four or five baptisms a year into the mid-1700s, and which even in the nineteenth century had a population of only 105 people[14]. (Note: This parish is called Gilling near Helmsely on Family Search, although older records and other sites call it Gilling East. And yes, it is near Helmsley.)

There are several entries in the Gilling East parish records for people with sound-alike and phonetically spelled names in Cawton. Together, they show a pattern likely to represent one family. These include:

  • "John Meday and Mary Marshall of Cawton were married May 29, 1710."[15]
  • "Ann, daughter of John Meday", baptised July 31, 1710[16];
  • "William, the posthumous son of John Mudey of Cawton," baptised 12 Jun 1720[17];
  • "Widow Mudy of Cawton", in the 15 May 1724 burial of Ann's likely sister Elizabeth[18];
  • "Son of Mary Moody, Widow of Cawton", in the 31 Oct 1737 burial of her likely brother Richard[19].

Such variations in spelling weren't uncommon at the time, because surnames were not fixed, and spelling often varied widely[20]. The Moody-Meday-Mudey-Mudy set may be related to local pronunciation or perhaps a misinterpretation of regional dialects[20]. Further, this parish register is a challenge in terms of the quality of its pages, writing and entries. As an example, several pages are so faded as to be almost unreadable; entries are overwritten; and Ann Moody's name is entered instead as Mary in one version of her 1735 marriage record, the year-end Bishop's Transcripts[21], which were prepared for submission to regional church authorities. (A very early example of transcription errors.)

As for other potential parents, John Moody and "Senie" (no last name) have been identified on several online trees, with no sources noted. While these may be referring to the John Moody of Leconfield who married Sens (or Sense) Dry in 1716 in Langtoft, East Riding of Yorkshire[22] -- a considerable distance east -- there is no evidence that this couple had a surviving daughter Ann (the one baptised as Ann Mowdy or Moudy in Leconfield in 1723 died in 1725[23]), nor that they had any connection with Cawton, Gilling Parish, NRY.
