Notes for Johannes Muck: From "The Descendants of Johannes Mook c1720--c1785, by Vern Erickson, Mook Family Researcher, 163 pages, published in Bellbrook, Ohio. Begin page 1: Family surname is usually spelled Muck in early records (passenger lists, church records, land records) and Mook in later records. Some records spell name Moke, Mooke, Mauk, Munk, Mucke, and Mock. Mook sometimes looks like Moor in old documents/census records. Johannes is probably from the Palatine region of Germany. He came to America on the ship St. Mark, landing in Philadelphia on September 26, 1741. The ship sailed from Rotterdam via Cowes (southern England). Ship passenger lists call him Johannes Muck, Conas Mook and Johannes Muck.s of Johannes Mook, Circa 1720-1785. According to Roberts in "History of Lehigh County," a large number of German immigrants in 1741 were redemptioners (indentured servants). They served 3,4,5,6 or 7 years, often saving enough money to later purchase land. Johannes may have been a redemptioner because the earliest known record for him after his arrival in America is for a land warrant for 150 acres in Bucks Co in 1746 (after his service?), per "Pennsylvania Archives III", Vol. 24. This land is on Antelauny (Maiden) Creek in what is now Lynn Township, Lehigh Co. The Lehigh County Court House has the original land draft record (#980) in its files.Johannes Much (Muck) as a pioneer settler of Lynn Township (page 812). The family is believed to have stayed on the Lynn Township farm until the French and Indian War when the Allemangel (all want) area was virtually deserted (according to Robert's "History of Lehigh Count:). Church records from the area do not mention the Mucks. They were probably members of the a German Reformed church variously known as Allemangel, Lynn Township, Organ and Ebenezer. The earliest records for this church seem to have been lost. Johannes left the area for present-day Montgomery County for safety from the Indians. The Mucks are found in the Old Goshenhoppen Church records from 1758 through 1773.They were German Reformed. See "Pennsylvania German Church Records" from the Pennsylvania German Society Township of Montgomery County. Johannes and his family lived nearby in Marlborough Township.Brittinham's "1769 Proprietary Tax,Montgomery County, Pennsylvania" shows John Maak who was taxed 150 acres, 4 horses and 4 cattle. This is Johannes Muck. The only other person in the area with a similar name at the time is John Mock of Upper Hanover Township. John Mock and his descendants stayed in the area for many years and are mentioned in many documents, e.g. wills and Goshenhoppen Luther Church records. These records distinguish John Mock from Johannes Muck of Marlborough Township. Additional evidence suggests that Johannes Muck lived in Marlborough township. The Old Goshenhoppen German Reformed records show a Muck family in many baptismal records. The sponsors of the Muck children are Bossarts/Bosserts, Reyers/Royers, Wolfarts, Goetzs,Mainers and other families, all of who were neighbors in Marlborough (according to the 1769 tax list). Likewise, the Mucks were sponsors to children of the same families. .... In 1778 or 1779 the Mucks moved to the Buffalo Township area of Northumberland Co, later Union Co, PA. Various land and tax lists include Johannes (John) as the owner of 140 acres In Buffalo Township in 1779.... These records show John Mook/Muck with 140 acres in 1780, 150 acres in 1781, 341 acres in 1782 and 100 acres in 1783. He (or a son) was a charter member of the Dreisbach German Reformed Church of Buffalo Township.
ANNALS OF BUFFALO VALLEY p.388 Year 1810 (likely Jacob or George or John) Among other characters of this date, were Billy Nicholas, a car- penter of White Deer, and old Mr. Mook, the revolutionary soldier. Saturday was the usual day to assemble in Lewisburg, and getting pretty drunk, old Mook asserted he could "hex a bullet" at an hundred yards. Mook held a silver bullet in his hand and began powwowing.Billy shot from the porch of Metzgar's tavern, knocked the bullet out of Mook's finger, skinning the latter considerably, thus disabusing Mook's mind of the idea that he could "hex."
