Ritmeester/Captain of the Swellendamse Dragonders during the Battle of Blaauwberg. [7]
Historians' accounts conflict on whether Johannes (Jan) Zacharias Moolman was one of the casualties at the battle of Blaauwberg (which means date of death 1806)[8] or whether the horse depicted in the painting of him was in fact from one of the British officers he shot during the battle and that the painting was made after the battle (which means he survived the battle).[9]
Jùrgen Johannes Gildenhuijsen's will of 26 March 1807 gives credence to the latter, as it states Jurgen's mother as married to Johannes Zacharias Moolman at the time.[10]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Johannes by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Johannes:
Death date of 1858 is suspect. He must have been 109 years old at the time. Historian Louis Changuion states Johannes Zacharias Moolman as one of the casualties of the battle of Blaauwberg (1806).
