Henry was born in 1791 in Amsterdam, Botetourt Co., VA, to John and Anna Barbara Moomaw. He probably spent his childhood in that area. Sometime after 1810, his parents and siblings migrated to Ross County, OH. Later, according to family tradition, Henry rode alone on horseback to join them. He and his brother-in-law, Joseph Beath, were chain carriers for a survey of Henry's land next to where the Beaths were living in Ross County.
There, in 1814, Henry married Anna Gray, daughter of John and Sarah Gray. (On-line records indicate 1815). Henry, Anna, and three sons under the age of ten are enumerated in the 1820 US Census of Paint Twp., Ross Co., OH. They are shown living next to his recently widowed sister, Barbara Moomaw Beath.
The family was still living next door to Barbara when they were listed in the Federal Census of 1830. Included are Henry and Anna, six sons under the age of fifteen and two daughters under the age of ten--which corresponds exactly with Henry's known family.
In the 1840 US Census of Paint Township, Henry is shown with his wife, five sons and five daughters. So, it appears two children had left home by then. The exodus continued, and by the time of the 1850 US Census, only two children were left in the family home: Henry [60, VA, farmer]; Ann [54, PA]; Martha [15, OH]; and Nelson [11]. His recently married son, Jacob, is shown living next door. The 1860 US Census shows Henry, his wife and 4 children. As the children were as young as 10, it seems likely that they may be grandchildren: Henry [70, VA, farmer]; Ann [65, PA]; Nelson B. [21, PA, school teacher]; Elizabeth [18, PA]; Henry [13, PA]; and Peter [10, PA].
Henry died in 1869 and is buried on his farm in Paint Township. Anna died in 1881 and is buried in South Salem, Ross County.
