Biography

Philip was born in1802 (the date appears in a family history prepared in 1973, and also in the Collection of Puke Ariki),

ORIGINALLY thought to be the son of NK (as in Not known) Moon (b ~1775, Cornwall, England) and Joan Moon (b ~1771, Lanlivery, Cornwall, England), and these people are linked as his parents, marked uncertain.

There is a baptism record in Devon 166/9 showing Philip, son of Philip and Mary Moon, born 28th April 1802 [1].

As at 1841 England and Wales Census, he appears with his family as aged 35-39 years [2]. He was a stonemason, the family lived in Churchtown, St Blazey Parish, St Austell, Cornwall.

Recent research has confirmed that Philip married Sarah KNOWLING (not Knowles as previous thought) [3]. His death certificate states his parents are Phillip and Mary (nee Hawken) Moon.

The Moon family arrived in New Plymouth, NZ, aboard the ship Blenheim on the 19th November, 1842, having sailed from Plymouth, England, on 02 Jul 1842.

Moons Reef in New Plymouth, which there is a rockery of stones compiled from a stone house, later demolished, which was built by Phillip Moon. The reef is located off Belt Road. Phillip was listed as Mason in 1855-1861 Jurors list. He went to Kawau Island for a brief time to help erect copper ore furnaces.

He passed away in 1882, [4], bd. Te Henui Cemetery, 15 Jan 1885. Both the death certificate and burial record state his age as 79 years [5].
