Will share details. Any Australian emigrants from Kinnity?
Dean and Lori Mooney have performed significant research into this family and has determined their point of origin in Ireland. The notes below are from them:
I know exactly where the little stone cottage (in ruins) is. The last occupant was John "Jack" Mooney. He was a bachelor, youngest of his family who remained behind in Ireland. (I think he was a nephew of Michael Mooney) He died in 1932. The little cottage went into neglect after that. Roof fell in etc. Only the stone walls and fireplace remain. It is on a "remote" piece of land now owned by another family who live on their farm not too far away.
Tom, your notice from the Boston Pilot was quite a catch. Sounds like Bridget was desperately seeking this brother who went west. From what we could gather thru interviews with now mostly dead relations, the children were orphaned during the Famine. Bridget (and her bother?) were given passage to America to NYC, possibly arranged thru the parish of Kilmaley or the local landlord to "clear" his property of orphans/peasants etc. All too common story. Also note that the parish records BEGIN in 1829 just prior to Catholic Emancipation in 1832. It would be my guess that since families had usually 8 children on average, spaced 18 months apart, that this Dan, Hannah and Bridget were the three YOUNGEST of the brood, lucky enough to have actually been recorded. Same problem with Michael Mooney's siblings over on the parish records at Kinnity in Offaly.
FWIW, Michael emigrated with his brother John & some said a "Patrick" as well. Had heard they got employment in NYC also, on what was a dairy farm in the area now known as "Coney Island" Amusement park. A Patrick Mooney, single, laborer was on the 1855? 1860?(can't recall offhand) census for Brooklyn, King's Co. NYC but Michael and John had long since left for Mpls./St. Paul Have pursued in vain any trace of this Patrick in NYC. Corresponded with a Bergin woman retired in Florida, now dead, whose family in Brooklyn lived next door to "Mooney's also from Newtown, Kinnity". So I know that other Mooney's emigrated from Newtown to NYC. The Famine wreaked tremendous havoc on the island, and scattered families far and wide. Indeed, some literally to Australia and America unbeknownst to each other and lost forever. You figure the trail is often over 150 years cold and it is a monumental task to try to gather the torn threads and "re-weave" the tapestry. You have to have the testimony of 80 plus year olds who still recall their "Grandparents" from the famine era. Sometimes sketchy at best.
All my research is qualified with "a work in progress, subject to corrections!!!" So with the building of the RR in Mpls, there was intense need for labor. Bishop Cretin and Mr. Hill, the RR baron, placed many advertisements in The American Celt Newspaper of NYC for Irish to come west. No doubt both Bridget and Michael heard of the opportunities in Mpls. Michael worked as a teamster. Laborers earned a dollar a day, those with a team of horse earned two dollars a day. He hauled rock for the roadbed of the RR being built. Saved enough money to buy a home in Mpls (where the Humphrey Dome stands now!) After the railroad was finished, he hauled gravel and stone for the city to help build the sewer lines. It was this experience with their father that the sons Michael E. (from the 1st marriage) Thomas and Phillip (from the 2nd) were able to know where all the "original lines had been laid". Thus they knew exactly where to "tie in" to the exisiting pipes when everyone wanted indoor plumbing after the turn of the century, hence the birth of Mooney Bros. Plumbing of Mpls. was achieved! Michael Mooney LOVED horses. Mad for em. He attended his youngest son, Vincent John Mooney's wedding in Mpls. on 25 April 1905 to Olga Nelson, a Swedish immigrant. At the wedding, there was speculation about his "senile" behavior. He went round to each table and stole sugar cubes for his pockets. What the guests could not have known is that he wanted them for the horses tied and hitched to the carriages outside. He obviously imparted this same love to his daughter Ann Mooney Sexton as they were reported to have also loved horses as
well. Was told they had a trained circus pony they rescued for their livery stable!

MESSAGE #1
Michael Mooney married 1st to Bridget Enness of Co. Queen's, (Co. Laois, Ireland) in Hennepin Co., spring of 1855
Bridget Duffy married first to Thomas Murphy. Murphy MAYBE enlisted in the Civil War in 1863 and left Bridget with her 2 small daughters. Family legend says he was either ill or injured and sent home. They conceived their 3rd and last daughter upon his return. Thomas died from complications of pneumonia on 8 March 1867. Returning soldiers had brought a raging epidemic back home with them after the war ended.
Still cannot confirm that Thomas fought in the Civil War. It could be that he died in the 'aftermath" of that epidemic and that is where the "soldier" story got grafted into the folklore.
In any case, Thomas had a homestead in Maple Grove, Minn. and thus Bridget was a "woman of property". Shrewdly, she never sold it but kept the farm, and rented it after she married her 2nd husband Michael Mooney. This provided income.
Meanwhile, back in Mpls., Michael Mooney's 1st wife died in childbirth. Their infant daughter, Annie Mooney, died 2 weeks later. Mother and daughter are both buried together at St. Anthony's Cem. Incidentally, Bridget Duffy Murphy Mooney is
buried beside her 1st husband Thomas at St. Anthony's. And likewise, Michael Mooney is buried beside his 1st wife as well
Michael was left with three small children, John, Mary and Michael Jr. He met and married the "widow Murphy" Bridget Duffy Murphy. Together they had 7 more children of their own:
Ann R. Mooney SEXTON ( ran a Mpls livery stable)
Thomas Desales Mooney (Plumber in Mpls)
Phillip Joseph Mooney (Plumber in Mpls)
Francis Xavier Mooney (Mining engineer)
Agnes Mooney Bergstrom (Lumber mill in Washington state)
Vincent John Mooney (Plumber in Chicago)
Edward Mooney (died young)
Bridget Duffy Murphy Mooney's daughter, Winnifred Theresa Murphy from her 1st marriage with Thomas Murphy, grew very unhappy as the oldest daughter with the increasing burden of caring for her mother's children from the second marriage. She
left home at age 13 to spend a summer with her "Uncle Duffy" out in Montana. While there she met and fell in love with and later married, whom we are told was her first cousin, John Duffy, about 1879. They had a big family of 12 kids.
Her mother Bridget was VERY unhappy with this union and "disowned" her. Winnifred did not return to Mpls again until 1918. She came by train to Mpls while on her way to visit the grave of her son overseas. While there she met with Mooney
relatives she had not seen in 40 years. Her son, Michael Duffy was killed in France in WWI on 4 Aug 1918.
After the war, Margaret SEXTON Davis, d/o of Ann Mooney Sexton, moved with her husband Ivan to Great Falls, Montana and she had contact with her Aunt Winnie and cousins. Abt. 1920?, the Duffy clan left Philipsburg and moved to Portland.
There is next to nothing on the Duffy family in Montana in the family folklore amongst the Mpls. Mooney elderly whom we had contacted back in the 1980's. But according to the Philipsburg, Montana historian, there was a Duffy ranch, 2 miles
sw of the town. Also a Duffy Mine. John Duffy was a Sheriff's Deputy in Philipsburg from 1890-1900. Census shows them too.
Francis Xavier Mooney (half brother to Winnie Murphy Duffy)who is my husband's great grandfather, spent a summer working in their mine during a semester in college. He later graduated from the Minn. School of Mines at Univ. of Minn. After graduation he went out to Butte for a year and then was offered a position with Phelps Dodge down in Clarksdale, Arizona.
Their sister, Agnes Mooney Bergstrom, also married and moved west to Mukilteo, Washington where her husband ran a profitable lumber mill. There was said to be some contact between Agnes children and their Duffy cousins in Portland as well
in the 1940's. Winnie is buried in Riverview Cem in Portland with 4 of her children. Not sure where her husband is buried? Philipsburg perhaps? Which may have prompted her move westward to live with her children???
The trail was very cold by the time we stumbled on it. I gave up trying to trace Winnie's son "Joe Duffy" who died in 1980 in Portland, as it was such a common name.

Title: Mooney - misc. notes (1)
Abbreviation: Mooney - misc. notes (1)
Note: This was a second marriage for both Michael Mooney and Bridget Duffy. Michael's first wife is also a Bridget and is buried at St. Anthony Cemetery Minneapolis MN. Bridget Duffy's first husbands name was Murphy. From Lori Mooney - compilation of notes published on message boards by Lori. MESSAGE #1 Michael Mooney married 1st to Bridget Enness of Co. Queen's, (Co. Laois, Ireland) in Hennepin Co., spring of 1855Bridget Duffy married first to Thomas Murphy. It could be that he died in the 'aftermath' of that epidemic and that is where the 'soldier' story got grafted into the folklore. In any case, Thomas had a homestead in Maple Grove, Minn. and thus Bridget was a 'woman of property'. Shrewdly, she never sold it but kept the farm, and rented it after she married her 2nd husband Michael Mooney. This provided income.Meanwhile, back in Mpls., Michael Mooney's 1st wife died in childbirth. Their infant daughter, Annie Mooney, died 2 weeks later. Mother and daughter are both buried together at St. Anthony's Cem. Incidentally, Bridget Duffy Murphy Mooney is buried beside her 1st husband Thomas at St. Anthony's. And likewise, Michael Mooney is buried beside his 1st wife as well Michael was left with three small children, John, Mary and Michael Jr. He met and married the 'widow Murphy' Bridget Duffy Murphy. Together they had 7 more children of their own: Ann R. Mooney SEXTON ( ran a Mpls livery stable) Thomas Desales Mooney (Plumber in Mpls) Phillip Joseph Mooney (Plumber in Mpls) Francis Xavier Mooney (Mining engineer) Agnes Mooney Bergstrom (Lumber mill in Washington state) Vincent John Mooney (Plumber in Chicago) Edward Mooney (died young)Bridget Duffy Murphy Mooney's daughter, Winnifred Theresa Murphy from her 1st marriage with Thomas Murphy, grew very unhappy as the oldest daughter with the increasing burden of caring for her mother's children from the second marriage. She left home at age 13 to spend a summer with her 'Uncle Duffy' out in Montana. While there she met and fell in love with and later married, whom we are told was her first cousin, John Duffy, about 1879. They had a big family of 12 kids. Her mother Bridget was VERY unhappy with this union and 'disowned' her. Winnifred did not return to Mpls again until 1918. She came by train to Mpls while on her way to visit the grave of her son overseas. While there she met with Mooney relatives she had not seen in 40 years. But according to the Philipsburg, Montana historian, there was a Duffy ranch, 2 miles sw of the town. School of Mines at Univ. of Minn. After graduation he went out to Butte for a year and then was offered a position with Phelps Dodge down in Clarksdale, Arizona.Their sister, Agnes Mooney Bergstrom, also married and moved west to Mukilteo, Washington where her husband ran a profitable lumber mill. There was said to be some contact between Agnes children and their Duffy cousins in Portland as well in the 1940's. Winnie is buried in Riverview Cem in Portland with 4 of her children. Not sure where her husband is buried? Philipsburg perhaps? Which may have prompted her move westward to live with her children??? The trail was very cold by the time we stumbled on it. I gave up trying to trace Winnie's son 'Joe Duffy' who died in 1980 in Portland, as it was such a common name.
