John Seay was a son of Abraham Seay II and Naomi "Amy" Loving. According to family records in the Bible of Catherine Pollard (Mrs. Burwell Washington) Seay, John Seay was married 23 December 1773 to Rebecca Moore. The aforementioned Bible is located at the Library of Virginia.

John and Rebecca Seay had nine children:

Judith married Christopher Loving

Warren married Mary Bishop

Burwell married Catherine Pollard

Jesse married Sallie Stratton

Abraham married Susan Barker

Elisha married Susan Toney

Mary married William Catlett

Edith married Richard Omohundro

John married Catherine Price.
