Hugh Moore was a South Carolina colonist.

Hugh was born on 15 September 1850. [1][2]

Hugh Moore's parents were Joseph Moore and Ruth unknown. [citation needed]

Hugh was born in County Antrim, Ireland.[citation needed]

Hugh married Sarah in 1772 at Wofford's Fort in South Carolina.[3]

Sarah testified that she and Hugh had 15 children. She had a Bible which contained her family information.

"It fell into the possession of her son in law, Edward Stevens, that while in his possession, his children (as she is informed and does verily believe) tore out the sheet or leaves containing said Records, which was put back again loosely and afterwards it got lost out and never been seen since for now near two years."

This document is from 1839. Through the loss of her Bible, she lost the birth records of her 15 children, her marriage record and Hugh's death record. [4]

Some children of Hugh and Sarah are:

  1. Mary Catherine (Moore) Light b February 12, 1774 South Carolina
  2. Joseph Moore b May 1776 (2nd child)
  3. John A. Moore
  4. John Moore b 1778
  5. William Moore b 1780
  6. Hugh L. Moore Jr. b 1797[5][6]
  7. Marium (Moore) Stevens b May 15, 1805[7]

Hugh served as Revolutionary War soldier from South Carolina. He moved to Warren County, Kentucky, after the war. [8][9]

Hugh served as a lieutenant under Captain Major Pearson,[10]

There is a Revolutionary War service Indent Certificate on record dated 1786 for "Mr Hugh Moore (Lieut)" for 136 pounds, seven shillings and ten pence for service in Roebuck's Regiment.

Hugh moved to Kentucky in 1811. (In 1832, it was stated that he had lived in Kentucky 21 years.)[11]

Hugh Moore, Senior is listed on line 11 of the 1820 Warren County, Kentucky Census. His son, Hugh Moore, Jr. is listed below him on line 17.[5]

On 23 July 1832, Hugh appeared before the Justices of the County Court of Warren, now sitting, Hugh Moore, a resident of the County and State aforesaid aged 82 years on the 15th of September next. [12]

Hugh died on 24 October 1833 in Kentucky.[13]

As far as is known, Hugh is not related to the Charles Moore of Spartanburg Co., who also originated from Northern Ireland.
