I live in Dallas. My mother grew up in Houston. Although she was born in Hondo, they moved to to Houston when she was 3. I used to visit my grandparents and the rest of Mother's immediate family when I was a kid. That was some trip back then. When I was preschool age, we had to get up at 4 AM. The old model T Ford would have been packed the night before with luggage in the back seat and an extra battery on the running board. A quilt would have been placed on top of the luggage and Ken and I were put down to sleep some more. Some of the roads were only deep ruts. We would arrive at Grandmaw and Grandpaw's house at the end of Columbia Street next to the White Oak Bayou at about 9 that night. Think of our ancestors travelling on foot or horse drawn wagon. How long would the same trip have taken them?
When I was older, I could take a train called, I think, the Sunshine Special. I still have relatives in the area. I certainly have had my memories stirred up today.
Ken lives in Palestine, TX. and my younger brother, Steve, lives in the country near a place called Caddo Mills. It is close to Greenville.
