OBITUARY. ENGINEER'S DEATH MR. ROBERT F. MOORE GRAFTON BRIDGE DESIGNER The death occurred at the Auckland Hospital on Saturday of Mr. Robert Forbes Moore, who will be chiefly remembered as the engineer responsible for the planning and erection of the Grafton Bridge. Mr. Moore was in his 74th year. He was born in South America, but received his education in England, where he joined tho Royal Engineers. ,As a youug man Mr. Moore went to Australia, and there became interested in mining engineering, a career which he followed in various States, but particularly in West Australia and in Tasmania. He became associated with the Ferro-Concrete Company as engineer, and about 1903 was sent over to Auckland by it to supervise the construction of the King s Wharf in ferro-concrete. His company designed the wharf, and undertook the contract for the work from the Auckland Harbour Board. In 1907 the Ferro-Concrete Company was the successful tenderer for the Grafton Bridge, the whole of the working plans having been drawn up by Mr. Moore. The work was begun in May, 1907, and completed in April, 1910. It was then the largest ferro-concrete bridge in the world and was unique in having the widest arch-span of any such bridge. The greatest span was 320 ft. long, and the total cost was over £35,000. Mr. Moore went to serve in 1917 with the New Zealand Tunnelling Corps in France, and later rejoined the Royal Engineers, with whom he had been associated in his youth. Returning to Auckland, he carried on the practice of his profession practically until the time of his death. He is survived by his widow and a daughter.
