Biography

1843: John Moore was born on 16th Jan 1843 [1] in the Goulburn area of NSW to John Moore and Margaret Considine, and was christened at St Saviours Church, Goulburn in March 1843 [2] [3]. His mother had an earlier child, Henry, to William Pitt Faithfull prior to the wedding (and a second child, Matilda, may also have been to one of the Faithfull brothers). John's father John was the dairyman for William Pitt Faithful and Henry Faithfull on their property Springfield, south of Goulburn.[4] His parents had married on 3rd September 1839 at St Peters and Pauls Old Cathedral in Goulburn.

1845: John's parents are reported to have moved between July and November to The Hollow Station at Hedi, Victoria (later called "Edi"). Here they managed the station for William Faithfull. About five years later, they moved on to Whorouly where they managed a station for Dr. George Edward Mackay, J.P.[4]

Sometime before John married Elizabeth in 1864, he bought a property on One Mile Creek at Wangaratta and named it Tenterfield.[4]

1864: On 1st Feb 1864 John, aged 21, married Elizabeth Mary Clark (b. 1843) in Holy Trinity church, Wangaratta [5]. Elizabeth was the daughter of William Henry Clark - the "Father of Wangaratta". John's younger brother William (b. 1845) married Elizabeth's younger sister Alice (b. 1851) eight years later in 1872.

John and Elizabeth then had 10 children: Charlotte (25 Apr 1864, less than 3 months after the marriage); John George (1866); Margaret (1868 - married John Charles Lowe); Sarah Ann (1870); William Clark (1873); Henry Arthur (1875); Thomas Edward (1877); Elizabeth Mary (1879); Charles Ernest (1881); and Edith Sophia (1884).

1868: In October 1868 he was in court in Wangaratta, charged with assaulting someone [6]. The Newspaper article indicates that John worked as a barber in Wangaratta. He was committed to trial at the general sessions in Beechworth but no further details are known [7]. In January 1869 John was a witness in another court case, where he is also referred to as a barber [8]. A similar situation also occurred in 1870 [9].

1875: In Feb 1875 a John Moore purchased, for £170, a brick cottage and half acre of land at Chiltern [10] - though it is unknown if this was John Moore Snr or Jnr [11].

1877: In Feb 1877 John applied to bring a section of land in Wangandary under the land statute [12] [13]. In March 1877, John's wife Elizabeth applied to bring another section under the land statute [14] [15]. It is unclear, but these sections appear to refer to land being leased by William Clark (John's father-in-law), so may have been done in connection with him, or as an attempt to bring this land to Auction?

At some point John appears to have moved from Wangaratta to a nearby farm at Wangandary (and hence possibly changed from being a barber to being a farmer). His children up until Thomas (1876) are listed as being born in Wangaratta, but the latter three from Elizabeth (1878) are listed as being born at Wangandary [16].

1879: In June 1879, John Moore jnr was granted his application for 60 acres of land in Wangaratta North, though it may be that he did not live on this land [17] [18]. Also, a July 1879 newspaper wrticle refers to John as a Farmer from Wangaratta [19].

1880: In August 1880, John was fined 2s 6d for "not sending his daughter to school the prescribed number of days" [20] (this would have been either 12yo Margaret or 10yo Sarah). In August 1881 we was fined 7s 6d for the 3rd incidence of the same offence [21].

1887: In 1887 there are newspaper records of him paying a number of Wangaratta hospital invoices [22] [23], though no associated record of a family member born, ill, or died at that time can be found. There is also a record of him being in court for "obstructing the footpath" [24]!

1898: John's wife Elizabeth died in December 1898 [25] (in Carlton Women's Hospital, Melbourne), and John died half a year later on 4th July 1899 in Wangaratta, aged 56yo [26]. Both were buried in Wangaratta. At his death John was intestate, but probate documents (including from his oldest son John George) list his 10 children and his assets. These indicate that he had approximately 20 acres in North Wangaratta, including a 4-roomed weatherboard cottage, stable and hayshed (value £197). He also had "landed property held under lease or licence from the crown" along with live stock and farming implements (value: nil).

  11. It is unclear which John Moore this is - i.e. Senior (b. 1815) or Junior (b. 1843), but by 1875, John snr was 60 years old, so it might be more likely it is John jnr.

This is now the area 100m in each direction from the intersection of Wareena St and Nolan St, and the southern half of Bruck Cricket Oval. These only total 15 acres, so must not be the 60 acres granted in 1879.
