Biography

Rachel (Moore) Hudson was born about 1814 in Tennessee. It is thought that she married a John Hudson. She was already widowed/single by the time the 1850 census was taken so records need to be found to verify that.

Rachel was living in Laclede County, Missouri in 1850.[1] Although head of household she had no occupation listed.[1] Her children Lydia (16), Martha (12), John (12), Biven (8) and Mary (4) were in the home with her.[1] None of the children attended school that year.[1]

Rachel (age 45) was living in Au Glaze Township in Camden County, Missouri in 1860.[2] She owned no real estate but did own $160 of personal estate.[2] Rachel stayed at home with Patsy (age 18), Mary (age 13), William (age 10) and Ellen (age 5) while John (age 23) and Bevin (age 16) worked as Farm Laborers to support the family.[2] Rachel and John were both marked as being over the age of twenty-one and unable to read or write.[2]

In 1870 Rachel (age 58) was living in Hooker, Laclede, Missouri.[3] She stayed at home while her son William (age 18) worked on the farm.[3] Her daughter Ellen (age 16) was not yet old enough to marry and stayed at home with her mother.[3] None of the three could read or write.[3] Her son Biven (age 25) lived next door with the Monroes and worked as a Day Laborer.[3] Rachel owned no real estate and $100 of personal estate.[3]

Research Notes

  • No marriage record has been found for Rachel yet. In checking for a J Hudson that married a Rachel the only marriage I saw was for a Rachel Kiel in New Jersey, and that Rachel died in New Jersey. Searching for a Rachel/Rachael that married any Hudson within a ten year period of her first child resulted in 26 entries. None were in Missouri or Tennessee. As we don't know where in Tennessee she came from it's hard to know which other state she might have gone to (neighboring states of Tennessee: Kentucky, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri). Georgia is the only state listed in those 26 choices.
    • Rachel Sailors married Thomas Hudson 1838
    • Rachel C Ramsey married Francis A Hudson 1844
Of course she could have been married in an entirely other state, or she could have married in Tennessee (the logical place) and her marriage is not indexed (or indexed improperly).(Silva-1055 13:00, 22 May 2019 (UTC))
  • The 1850 census was originally (Ancestry Record 8054 #3849011 1850 US Census) in Laclede MIssouri as well, but it was for Ruth Moore, includes her son Alfred and other children). This was discounted as a census was found with household members that matched her and her children's names.
    • Ruth Moore, page 129B; image 263, Line 10, James Moore (son), Line 11; Robert line 12; Nancy Ann line 13; Alfred line 14
    • Rachel 33, Lydia Ann 16, John 12, Martha 12, Biven 8 and Mary 4. Note: Rachel, Lydia and John were born in Tennessee while Martha, Biven and Mary were born in Missouri.
  • The 1870 census originally used needs to be researched.[7] It is for AJ Moore, Rachel Moore, Eli Moore and Anna Moore. Although Rachel may have remarried, Ellen would have been fifteen and should have been on the census with her. Update: Rachel's census has been found with children William and Ellen in the home, and Biven next door.
  • Rachel's 1880 census has not been found yet. That would be the first census that asked marital status (if single, married or widowed).
